Bolanos Island Wildlife Refuge

(25 ha), (1981). It`s situated 1,5 kilometre off the
Descartes point in Salinas Bay (Guanacaste province), not far from the border
with Nicaragua. It consists of oval-shaped, rocky island that rises at 81 metres
above sea level. The sparse vegetation consists mainly of very thick shrubs.
There stunted 2 metres high forests (frangipani, gumbo-limbo, crown fig). The
island protects nesting sites of brown pelicans, american oystercatchers (the largest colony in the country), and
the only in Costa Rica nesting sitee of magnificent frigatebird. There are also
black vultures, some bats and a large population of ctenosaurs.
