Penas Blancas National Wildlife Refuge

(2.400 ha). It`s placed in the southern slopes of Cordillera Tilaran, on the border of two provinces: Puntarenas and Alajuela. It has perfectly rectangular shape.
It`s a area of very rugged terrain of volcanis origin. Its name means "white peaks" and comes from the local
deposits of diatomite, which can measure up to 4 metres thick. 64 % of its territory is covered by evergreen forests and the rest by high grass. In its south-west corner there is the highest peak Zapotal (1.199 m.a.s.l.). There are collared peccaries, kinkajous, red brocket deer,
black-eared opossum, pacas and common racoons. It`s covered by tropical dry
forests (spiny cedars, gumbo-limbo, oaks and ferns.
