RINCON DE LA VIEJA NATIONAL PARK
(14.084 ha), (1973). It`s situated in the centre of Guanacaste province, in Cordillera Guanacaste, 25 kilometres to North-East from Liberia. It consists of several craters: Rincon (1.806 m.a.s.l.), Von Seebach (1.895 m.a.s.l.) and Santa Maria ((1.916 m.a.s.l. - sometimes it`s considered to be a separate volcano). At the foot of the southern flank of the volcano there are areas known as Las Pailas and Las Hornillas which covers aooroximately 50 hectares. In the last one fumaroleshiss like kettles spitting up odiferous steam and gases.
Studied carried out in the park have identified 257 birds (three-wattled bellbird, quetzal, Montezuma oropendola, green amazon). It provides a shelter for cougars, tiger cats, tayras, kinkajous, ocelots, two-toed sloths, spider monkeys. It`s also where the largest wild growth of the country`s national flower, the purple orchid can be found.
